What to do when you are unhappy with yourself and life

By Hope Wilbanks

There are endless numbers of unhappy people in the world today. People literally go through life, as if they are a zombie, walking around in a daze. If you have been living your life like this, it’s time to wake up and snap out of it and do something about it.

Unhappiness is a deep-seated feeling that emanates from issues within you. Maybe you aren’t comfortable with your current living arrangement. Or perhaps you have goals and dreams that you would love to work towards but you feel stifled by your job. Pinpointing the root of your unhappiness is key to turning that negative feeling around and becoming a happier and more contented person.

Life

Let’s face it. For many, the life you lead past 30 is rarely the life you dreamed of having as a child. Things happen; things change. When they do, you either learn to roll with the punches life deals you, or you slink into a depressive and reclusive state of mind. If your life is making your miserable, ask yourself why. What about your life is making you so unhappy? What can you do to change that?

Career

Choosing a career you are passionate about is exciting. But when you are forced to choose between doing what you love and doing something you dislike just to pay the bills, your life can suddenly turn miserable. If your career path is not what you want or expected it to be by this point in your life, change it. Often times, adults feel trapped in their jobs, thinking they are too old to try something new. It is never too late—and you are never too old—to do what you love to do.

Family

Are you fed up with family differences? Family can either be the foundation of your life or the bitter root of unhappiness. If your family is pushing you and creating havoc in your life, often times the only way to put a stop to it is simply remove yourself. This might mean refusing phone calls or visits for a period of time. If taking a step back from your family results in you feeling a lot less stressed and more happy, then perhaps you should only allow yourself brief visits from time to time.

Unhappiness always has a beginning point. Dig deep and be honest with yourself to uncover the source of your unhappiness. While the prior three areas are often common things that create an unhappy person, they are not the only causes. Find out what is making you unhappy, then do something today to change that.
